Family Holidays: Tips and Tricks for Planning and Saving

On average, a domestic 1-week vacation for just 1 person costs over $1,500. And if you’ve got a spouse and/or kids, expect that number to skyrocket!
Considering that family holidays can take a good chunk out of your bank account, you want to make every penny count. So keep reading for some tips and tricks to plan a fun family holiday without spending a fortune!
Plan Early
If you already know you want to go on a family holiday next summer, then start planning now! It’s never too early to start planning, especially if you need to buy plane tickets and book hotel rooms.
You might want to take your chances on last-minute deals, as some of them are dirt cheap. But those work better for single people or couples. When you’ve got little ones in tow, you’ll want to have everything sorted out to ensure everyone gets to stick together.
If you book early enough, there are early bird specials that are just as good as last-minute deals anyway!
Sign Up for Alerts
The beauty of the internet is you can scan tons of offers with the click of a button. Not only that, but there are newsletters that alert recipients of fantastic deals too!
Sign up for as many of these as you can, and as early as you can. That way, you have plenty of time to sort through the deals and pick the ones that work best for your family.
Buy From Resellers
Typically, buying directly from companies won’t give you the cheapest prices. So you’ll want to buy from resellers if possible.
While it might take a bit more work, the money you’ll save will be worth it. For example, if you’re planning on joining the Disney Vacation Club (DVC), DVC rental pricing can be much cheaper when buying from a reseller. Plus, you’ll enjoy most of the same benefits anyway.
Go During Off-Peak Seasons
Destinations will be full of visitors during the summer, especially in popular cities. Try to take a staycation instead to save some money.
Or if you really want to go somewhere, then choose an off-peak season at least. For instance, if you want to go to Spain, travel between November and March, as that’s when the fewest tourists visit. Not only will there be fewer people, but airline and hotel prices will be lower as well.
Fly in the Middle of the Week
Another way to save is to book midweek flights. These fares will be a lot cheaper than those on Friday through Sunday.
But if you’re flying during the holidays, departing the day of the holiday will give you the cheapest rates.
