House Ants

Do you have an ant infestation in your home?

Ants are among the most common pest problems that people have in their homes. What makes this worse is that people don’t even notice until they have ants swarming over their leftovers. When this happens, it’s often too late since there are likely tens of thousands of them living in your home already.

If left untreated, ant infestations can harm your health and home. This makes it important to get rid of them soon, but did you know that there are different types of house ants?

There are unique ways for you to get rid of these ants if you want them to never come back. Read what’s below to learn what you need to learn about the type of ants you have to how you can get rid of them.

Odorous House Ants

These are the most common ant species that invade our houses. They often come in to seek out dry spots to get away from the rain. Expect them to be in your house when there’s even the slightest amount of rain outside.

They get their names because of the smell they give off when you crush them. The scent they give off is reminiscent of something rotting in a damp place.

These ants prefer sugary foods and will also go for bodies of dead insects. A good way to get rid of them is to lure them out of your house with some bait. A cube of sugar outside of your house is often enough to keep them outside.

Pavement Ants

These ants get their name because they prefer making their homes in concrete cracks and such. This makes sidewalks and large their ideal nesting grounds, only going inside to forage for food. Because of their preference, though, they can also live inside any cracks found in your basement.

They prefer greasy and meaty food items above anything else in the kitchen. This is why you should wrap your food well or put it in the refrigerator.

If you want to keep these ants out, an easy way to do so is to spray a mix of vinegar and water into their nest. This will drive them out of the house for sure.

Ghost Ants

These ants are common in Florida, and they’re as much of a pest as other ants. They’re like odorous house ants because they also give off a rancid smell when crushed. They also like sweeter food items like sugars and desserts.

What sets them apart from odorous house ants is that they have a pale abdomen. Their legs are also pale to the point that they’re close to being transparent. This makes it harder for you to spot them in dark spaces.

You can lure them out of your home the same way you get rid of the odorous house ants. Once they’re outside, their pheromones will lead others to the same spot, too.

Carpenter Ants

These ants are among the least common ones you will see in your house. These ants don’t like associating themselves with human habitats. You will often only see them when they’re passing by your home as they transfer nests.

Once you see some inside your house, though, it can only be bad news. Carpenter ants are often attracted to the scent of decaying wood. This means that your house may have some bigger problems beyond having a few ants in your home.

The best way to drive them out is to have your house checked out. They will leave with any decaying wood that you throw out.

Argentine Ants

These are the only ants on the list that aren’t native to the country. They don’t nest inside your home often but will go inside to forage for any food that they can find. These house ants also go inside to raid your house for any source of water.

You can identify these ants by their size and color. They’re often larger than most common types of ants and have a dark brown color.

If you find some of these ants in your house, it’s important that you don’t use pesticides against them. Pesticides are ineffective against them and will only harm you and your family.

Fire Ants

These are the ants that are directly harmful to humans. Fire ants are small, red ants that will bite anything that comes close to them. Their bites are painful and often contain a small amount of venom.

In small doses, these are harmless. What’s dangerous is that they also secrete a numbing agent when they bite. This means that you to your family will never know if there are lots of fire ants biting you as we speak.

Getting rid of these is of the utmost importance to keep you safe. It’s too dangerous to tackle them on your own, though. Calling professionals is the best choice if you want to get rid of bugs in your home.

Crazy Ants

Crazy ants get their name from the strange way they move. Most ants march in an organized line, but crazy ants go in all directions with no pattern.

They have a taste for the sweeter things in your kitchen. If you don’t have any, then you can expect to find them in your power box. These ants like sticking close to circuitry for warmth during cold nights.

The problem begins when their dead bodies start to block the current in your home. If you find heaps of dead ants in your power box, spray them with pressurized air to get rid of them. You can then get rid of the live ants by marking their frequented areas with vinegar.
