Have your organization have a clear and well thought out plan on how they plan to get their idea to fruition. This is possible if their basis is on thoughtful planning, appropriate research, and forecasting.

Since there is numerous organization applying for the same government grant as you are. It is best to ensure that yours has a clear plan if you want to have a grant-winning proposal. Also, anyone can have an idea about how to write a grant, but for it to become successful you need one that has a solid plan that can be executed.


  1. Use language that stands out 

A lot of requests are sent to the grant reviewers. This means they will have to read a lot of the grant proposals. Therefore, you need to incorporate language that will make your grant proposal stand out from the rest.

As you complete your grant request, you need to ask yourself if the language in your grant proposal fits what stands out or not. Also, does it give out a strong hook for what you are asking for? Plus, consider having third party validation for your efforts. In this way, you will have a proposal for strong consideration.

Every grantor wants to see what impact their funding will have before, during, and after the proposal and through the funding cycle. Thus, your organizations should have a plan on how they will provide excellent feedback on the results of the past projects.

The need to emphasize this in your grant proposal will come in handy as it will help the grantor anticipate the outcomes. Plus, the feedback will help to demonstrate a track record of the outcomes and the result of the project on the lives of people every day. Through this, you will be providing real-life stories to the grantors.

Most non-profits fail at the point where they think that they are competing with each other for resources. Yet, what they should compete against is the evolution of their organization’s journey. So, what is the older version of your organization?

This is what should be in mind as you write the grant proposal not how you can win it against a similar non-profit organization. Hence, to be successful in winning grants, especially from long-time funders, showing the evolution of your organization to meeting their current needs is a plus.

Having a relationship with funders is important as you seek a grant for your organization. Plus, most funders or foundations ensure they have a representative who is there to answer any queries.

The funders are open to you calling them where you feel you need further explanation and to ensure that the grant you write fits their focus. Therefore, they will help guide you in the right direction to avoid either of you wasting each other’s time.


  1. Show metrics with a story 

What is your return on investments and is there a person that has benefited from this? Consider giving this information and when you pair it with a person and their story therein, it is an ideal metric as you write your grant proposal.

So as parts of your metrics mention the number of people that you have affected and then share one of the many stories. Then, give your overall result and still share one person’s story. This is an inspiring and informative way to match your information.
